MA Theatre Lab, 2020

Having worked as an actor and puppeteer professionally for twenty years, I approached RADA’s MA Theatre Lab to amplify my creative voice and explore the development of my own theatre practice. This was the only masters programme I applied to as it was the unique content of the Theatre Lab along with the selection of the highly skilled teaching practitioners that told me this was the course for me.

Entering as a mature student had various challenges; committing to taking a year out of working life, managing the intense workload of a full-time masters programme and pushing my personal boundaries (not to mention navigating half of the course during a global pandemic), but the support and care RADA have created with the Theatre Lab has made this the most rewarding undertaking in my professional life so far.

Since graduating, I have furthered the development of my theatre company, Facing North Theatre, with projects incorporating the training to shape my work. I have also continued to collaborate with fellow graduates, Jack Parris and Kristin Winters, forming the collective Krēan(t)s.

The Theatre Lab is a practical springboard to continuing personal development exploring creative pathways that facilitate entry into professional arenas. The alumni and teaching practitioners continue to be an inspiring community of artists with which to collaborate and explore creative ideas.

As a theatre maker from a northern working class background, I believe the Theatre Lab has provided me with a supportive space to redefine my artistic journey and the confidence and rich creative vocabulary with which to shape my work.
